Okay this is not your run of the mill reading. For those who are into anime they already know what manga is ( and please forgive me if I mangle it a bit in the explanation). It's kinda like a hard back comic book. Oh yeah and you need to learn for many series) how to read from right to left instead of left to right.
Once you get over the "comic book" misconception ( as manga like anime encompasses many many genres and no not all of them are kid friendly) and school yourself in learning how to read it, you open a wide world of stories, adventures and more.
I know. I hated manga. It hurt my head trying ( minimmally) to wrap my mind around the new reading style.
And then I was introduced to Pet Shop of Horrors......
Pet Shop of Horrors is in the horror genre ( really?). Your main Character is Count D who runs a pet shop. It's a curious pet shop because sometimes the animal he sells you looks like a person. And acts like a person. Even talks to you ( though I get the idea that outsiders generally see an animal though that is questionable throughout both Pet Shop of Horrors and its second series Pet Shop of Horrors Tokyo).
Each pet comes with strict instructions that must be followed in regards to its care or things can get.....interesting.....and of course Count D will not be held responsible for your idiocy.
I thoroughly enjoyed all 10 volumes ( or was it 12) of the first series. By the end of it he moves to Tokyo hence the second series (which I've eaten vol. 1& 2 of).
Check it out. It's pretty neat. There is an anime they made off a few of the stories in volume 1 ( I think) however the manga is indeed better than the anime.
