This is kind of like Intro to Tarot 101 for your "Average" deck which generally have 78 cards Divided up into 3 parts. The Major Arcana The Minor Arcana Court Cards
Major Arcana These are the 22 cards that have those titles and roman numerals. So what are they? What is their significance? First they tell a story starting with card number 0 The Fool. They end with Card number 21 when he ends his journey (to start again). All the cards in between represent milestones of the journey the Fool makes on his way in life. They also can be likened to any major point that may be significant to your life as in some way we are all Fools. That is to say we are all beginners at some point on our spiritual journey.
Some call these cards the Fate cards. These are usually deeper messages that you should listen to. There is a lesson to be learned from them. When you draw a Major Arcana card pay attention to its message and in what spot it falls. It could be that your higher self or someone else has a message for you to be listening to and it would do well to listen.
Minor Arcana These cards come in four suits. Each Suit represents an aspect of our lives that we contribute directly to ( i.e. these cards show us the things we have control over whether it is personal or indirect ). Each suit also relates to an element.
Here are the Suits and their meanings:
Cups ( Water) - These deal with friends, family and emotions. Relationships and interactions of all kinds. Don't forget intuition and compassion.
Swords (Air) - These tell us about hurdles or obstacles we may have to get through before we can go on. The cards here deal with using our mind to overcome these hassles.
Wands (Fire) - These usually deal with buisnesses, traveling, or the starting of any new projects. Think creativity and energy!
Pentacles (Earth)- These tell us about our material environment and may relate to money matters . Remember the material environment could also refer to hearth and home
Now those are just a few names for the suits. They actually have different names ( same basic ideas ) depending on the deck you get.
Cups/Bowls/Dishes
Swords/Spears/Arrows/Knives
Wands/ Staffs/Staves/Rods
Pentacles/Disks/Coins/Plates
Same ideas just different names.
Court Cards These are what I call the "People cards" as they are, well PEOPLE! These cards can represent a lot of things. They can represent someone you already know, someone you knew, someone you will meet or an aspect of yourself. A reading with a lot of court cards in it could mean you are surrounded by the people the cards represent or it could mean that these are the aspects of yourself that are showing up at this point. It could also mean a combination of the two. Yeah I know tricky stuff there. Don't let it worry you though. It just takes some time and practice to get it straightened out.
The Court Cards are named so because all the people on them are Court people as in Royalty.
King- Older male. Stern figure. Male in Power
Knight - Young Male (no I do not mean kid wise....think late teens to early thirties...I warned you Tarot was not a science)
Queen - Older Female. Woman in a position of Power or Leadership
Princess - Child ( of either sex really) someone who is young. Youth.
The suit that is attached with the Court card ( such as Cup/Wand/Sword/Pentacle) will give you more in depth meaning to the personality or message that card has to offer to you .
.Depending on the deck:
King is usually King
Queen is usually Queen
Knight could also be Prince
Prince could also be Page
So now you know about your traditional tarot deck. Most books even include spreads meant to be used with the deck you use. Do not fret. You can (in my experience) use any spread with any deck. So long as you are comfortable with it.
How would you suggest go about finding your personal card in the Major Arcana?
I've had several close people use me as the Star when they've done readings about me, generally because it kept showing up before they decided to associated it with me and when they did the readings became more clear.
However I'd like to know if perhaps there is a way I can determine my own indicator card? I know they change over time.
