Lastnight I dreamed of owls. Not just one owl, oh no-no-no, but SEVERAL owls. Some where flying about, others were staring at me, some were hanging upside down and for whatever reason I didn't want to disturb them. I had the feeling they would attack if I made one wrong move.
While gorgeous (and one of my favorite animals to boot), they are generally seen as messengers. In a lot of cultures and beliefs they are also bad omens and harbingers of death.
I'll let our resident animal expert go from here as that's really all I know at this point (haven't had to work with Owl yet).
I am more familiar with their native American meaning: protector, wisdom and power. I know a some see them as bad omens/death, but I just don't see that in them.
Hellosies!
Owls are nifty animals. They can see REAL well in the dark....that is why people look to them to see past illusions, to find the truth behind dark places, to seek out answers in shadows, and to hunt around in the deep dark crevices of our subconscious landscapes.
Speaking of those mystical landscapes Owl has the ability to penetrate the mystical realm of dreams ( and is known to pass back and forth as a messenger between realms).
What else?
Dream magic, night magic, the ability to fly silently and in doing so considerably unseen ( the best way to gather information no?).
Owls feed on small rodents and other small animals. Did you know that they get rid of waste by throwing up the unnecessary components of their meals in small pellets?
Think on what that means for ingesting and digesting information.....

Yeah... Imagine if you were a fieldmouse on the way home and you came across uncle Billy's startled looking skeleton covered in owl drool. It would give you nightmares for weeks. Worse than alien.
I guess the owls evolved this habit through natural selection as the proto-owls that passed the mice carcasses through their entire digestive system were killed off by being fatally bitten on the ringpiece in Mr. Squeak's last act of defiant revenge. Constipation would be hard enough, but try passing a skull with rodent teeth in. I think I'd rather emit the pellet too.
