Elderberry syrup is a common remedy for respiratory ailments, a stout flu therapy (lessening severity and duration) and all around immune booster. From a scientific standpoint…elderberries inhibit the enzyme that viruses use to spread infection to host cells. Over the past couple weeks I have tried out several elderberry syrup recipes. Not all withstanding the taste buds. I narrowed it down to one recipe I got from a friend:
Simmer 3 cups water with 1/2 cup elderberries for 20 minutes
**Recipe called for a 1″ piece of ginger, cut up into pieces, to simmer with the berries – I didn’t care for the flavor so left this step out. It was noted as optional.
Mash berries and strain off the liquid. Discard the berries but place the liquid back on to simmer and reduce to 1 cup.
Add 1/2 cup honey and 1/4 cup brandy (1 of the small/single bottles behind the counter at the liquor store)
Place in bottle and store in fridge. It will last for at least 6 weeks. Makes 12 ounces.
Dose: Adults, 1/2-1 Tbsp. 3 x daily. Children: 1/2-1 tsp. 3 x daily (not for children under 1 due to the honey)
I've been taking 1 Tbsp. morning and night and so far, not a sniffle that has passed through AND no bladder/kidney infections - I tend to get those darn things at the mention of the word.
