Any fragrant, resinous plant may be used. Some suggestions:
Mugwort
Lavender
Rosemary
Sage (any variety)
Mint
Wormwood
Santolina
Pine
Cypress
Eucalyptus
Gather several stalks of fragrant, resinous plants. If some are long (3 foot mugwort stalks, for example), just fold them over. You want to have a bundle of herbs about 5 - 8 inches long and 1 - 2 inches wide. Place your bundle of plants on a piece of newspaper or brown paper bag. Tightly roll the paper over the herbs, folding in the sides and forming a cylinder. Fasten the roll with rubber bands or string. After a couple of days, the herbs inside the paper will have shrunk. Unfasten the rubber bands or string, re-roll tighter, and fasten again. Leave for a week. Take the herbs out of the paper. They should hold together. Fasten one end with brightly colored string wrapped around several times and tied. Use only cotton, hemp or linen string. Note: the stick will still need a few weeks to fully dry before use.
To use:
Light the end of the smudge stick. This may take a few tries. Once it is steadily smoking (but not flaming) use it in any of the following ways:
Purification
Wave the smoking smudge stick about 6 inches away from your skin all
over your body to banish negative influences and worries.
Cleansing Items
Pass the item to be cleansed several times through the smudge smoke to banish negative influences.
Insect Repellent
Partially fill a coffee can with sand or dirt. Light several smudge sticks and set them upright, one in each can, around the outdoors area where you will be. Always have a small container of sand nearby to extinguish the smudge. To save for re-use, wrap tightly in foil. Store in a cool, dry area, as you would herbs etc. Take care the smudge does not develop mould, as this can cause respitory distress in some people. If it becomes mouldy or damp, put in compost heap and start again. Some plants, such as scented geranium/pelargonium have a thick 'juicy' stalk. Any plant like this can be used, but the stalk must be crushed before it is dried in a bundle. Just roll a rolling pin over, or belt with one of those meat belting things.
Been too tired to set the story up properly hun. This whole wake up before the rooster does and deal with a whirlwind of activity on three different levels before I can breath for three hours straight is taking some getting used to .....
You set up the story I'll see if I can find that "spell".
OK - odd question - I have lots of herbs in the summer, and love to make my own, but winter is another story....where do you all get fresh herbs? Grocery store?
Pretty good actually the last time I did grow some, the problem is that my lizards would try to gnaw on it ... and sage isn't the best thing for them really, so I can't do that anymore so I'm stuck with purchasing the dried stuff.
