The hearth has always been known as the most sacred area of the home. The hearth is where the cooking is done. It was the nurturing center of the home, sacred to all the household gods and goddesses. If you are lucky enough to havea wood-burning stove adjoining your kitchen you understand its meaning as a gathering place--its the warmest place in your home. Even if you have a fire place in your home, the kitchen will still be considered the modern day hearth. It was customary to hang a broom beside the hearth to bless and protect it. Keeping a broom in your kitchen will energize it and keep it clean.
Hanging ropes of garlic, onions, or dried peppers in the kitchen prevents accidents and food poisoning, and absorbs all negative energy. Do not eat any vegetables set aside for protective purposes. Placing an onion in the windowsillalso will absorb negative energy. Replace every few months. Putting an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator clears it of negativity and also serves as an odor eater. Just as baking soda is used in laboratories to neutralize acids, it is used in magic spells to neutralize negative energy. Bay leaves added to a soup protect the family. Placed the cupboards they drive away evil and are also a natural roach deterrent.
