I wish I could remember which tribe this comes from.........
Again this is my rendition.
Coyote the trickster became jealous one day of Wolf. Everyone loved Wolf. He was fast and smart and wise. He even boasted that he could bring back the dead by shooting a magic arrow under the newly deceased.
Coyote wanted the people to love him as much as....no MORE than Wolf so he sought out with a plan in mind.
"Hello Wolf"
"Hello Coyote"
"I noticed that the people really love you."
"I do many things for the people."
"Yes.yes you do. I know one of these things is bringing them back to life so that they never die. I am thinking that that is not so good an idea. If something dies it should stay dead. After all are not the people just using you and your special gift?"
Wolf was very aware of Coyote's mischievous nature and so kindly told Coyote that he would think on Coyote's wise words.
Coyote puffed up and walked away thinking to himself:
"I am so smart. I know Wolf will listen and then when he stops making people come back to life they will be very angry at him. So angry that they will not be able to love him more than me!"
Sometime later a terrible thing happened. Coyote's son was bitten by a posionous snake and so Coyote sought Wolf out.
"Wolf! Wolf! My son has died! Please shoot your magic arrow under him so that he may come back!"
Wolf raised an eyebrow and said to Coyote :
"I thought heavily upon what you had told me. That dead things should stay dead and I agree. I no longer have my magic arrows for I no longer bring the dead back."
Coyote was dumbstruck.
The people however were still very happy with Wolf for instead of becoming angry they saw this decision as a wise one.
