I fell in love with this story when I first came across it. Unfortunately I do na remember which tribe it is from.....


Spider, Hare and the Moon


Moon was sad. She had spent many years looking at the people on Earth and she saw that they were afraid. They were afraid of dying.
She did not want people to be afraid and so to make them feel better she decided to call on her friend Spider to take a message to them.



"Spider", She said, "The people of Earth are afraid of dying and that makes me very sad. Please tell them that they will all die sooner or later but it is nothing to be scared of."


So Spider slowly made her way back to Earth, carefully picking her way down on moonbeams and sunbeams. On her way she met Hare.


"Where are you going Spider?", said Hare.


"I am going to give the people of Earth a message from Moon.", she said.


"Oh, you will take waaaay to long.I am very fast and can get the message to the people much quicker than you. Tell me the message and I'll take it there for you", replied Hare.


"OK! Moon wants the people of Earth to know that they will all die......", Spider started.


"Right! Tell the people of Earth that they will all die", said Hare.


"No,no no!"Said Spider. "That is not the whole message."


"Well then hurry then so I can deliver it! You are really too slow you know.", replied Hare.


With a sigh Spider started again " Moon wants the people of Earth to know that they will all die......"


"Gotcha! Tell the people of Earth that they will all die", said Hare.
And with that, Hare quickly dashed off to Earth.



Spider was very unhappy about how this was turning out and gloomily made her way back to Moon.She told Her what had happened and how Hare was so fast that there was nothing that Spider could do to stop Hare before he left. Moon was very cross with Hare and when he came back to tell them that he had given them the message, she hit him on the nose! And that is why to this day, the Hare has a split lip.


"You had better take the message yourself", said Moon to Spider.
Spider nodded and took off to Earth to give the people the message that Moon had originally intended.

And to this day, Spider is still carefully carrying Moon's message in the spinning of webs in the corner of our rooms - but how many of us listen?
