Okay so with autumn upon us it's hard not to get all geared up for these harvest holidays right? So what kind of decorating fun can you do with the kiddlers?
One of my favorite things to do is go out leaf hunting. Oh the shapes and colors this season has to offer is just inspiring and explosive! If you aren't sure which tree it came from you could always take your specimen home and google some key words ( small bright red leaf, large yellow leaf, etc) and learn about what you "caught".
I personally like to make leaf garlands with the leafs we get. It's not hard ( just make sure you dry out your leafs if they are damp). It's just like stringing popcorn together only....leafier!
Another thing that my mom did with me when I was a kid was foliage keepsakes. We would take a piece of construction paper ( any color we liked) and place our prized leaf on it. Then we would put a sheet of wax paper over that. Then mom would iron the wax paper ( on a low setting) sealing in our prized possesion.
Then there are leaf stencils ( trace your favorite leaf on construction paper and cut your own out or color them in ) and leave rubs ( get your favorite leaf and put a piece of paper over it and gently rub your favorite color of crayon over it).
Wait there is MORE!
These require fake foliage though ( which you can pick up leafy garlands from your local dollar store, sometimes thrift shops have em and of course the pricier side would be craft stores).
With a little hot glue ( glue gun) a bobby pin and a leaf you just made a snazzy hair decoration ( or a clip on for your shirt). Some people prefer to sew a couple of strands of thread to keep the pin and leaf together instead of the glue ( it is sticky). You can do the same with safety pins so you can pin your leafy decoration anywhere ( imagine making a faux strand on your purse or backpack!)
So there are plenty of activities you can do for yourself, or with your children when it comes to fun with foliage.
We have a serious holly orchard behind our house - and a few have the white/green multi-colored leaves - they make the coolest wreaths (strung together like pop-corn if I can steal that phrase? LOL). Kinda poky and hard to work with so better with the older kiddos.
I really like that maple leaf centerpiece - going to go leaf hunting today :-)
