These candy rocks can be eaten as a small treats, or added as a sweetener for your tea or coffee. Properties: stimulating, antioxidant, sedative, and are specially good for people with low blood pressure (like me) that tend to faint or feel dizzy after physical effort or during menstruation.
Ingredients (makes about a hundred pieces, in the size of a sugar lump):
- 200 grams (about half a pound) brown sugar.
- 100 ml (3,3 fluid ounces) of light syrup. You can use honey too, or other syrup of your choice, but if it’s thick, dissolve 50 ml of syrup in 50 ml of hot water.
- 1 full teaspoon of powdered cinnamon.
- 1 teacup of dried orange peel, powdered.
- 1 teacup of dried lemon peel, powdered.
Opcional: 1 teaspoon of powdered ginger. My syrup already had ginger so I didn’t add it. Before starting the cooking, prepare a surface for spilling the mix. I taped a strip of waxed paper (the one used for baking) to the kitchen table and sprinkled confectioner’s sugar over it. It is very important to do this beforehand because once the candy mix is ready, you can’t wait! Note: confectioner’s sugar is optional, it just makes them look prettier .
Put all ingredients together in a small pot and start with low-medium fire, stirring slowly to mix all ingredients well. Keep always an eye on the fire – after a few minutes you’ll see the mix starts bubbling (which is good), but you must avoid boiling it or the sugar will crystalize. Once all the sugar is dissolved and the mixture has taken a beautiful dark brown colour, which will take about 15-20 minutes, the mix must be very thick, thicker than honey – then it is ready. Spill the mix over the waxed paper in the thinnest layer you can get. LET IT COOL for about 30 minutes at least! Be very careful – when sugar is hot, burns are BAD!
You can make lines with a thin knife over the mix to make the breaking of the pieces easier while it’s still warm; once it’s completely cool, break the mix into small pieces and add a little more powdered sugar if you want them covered in all sizes. This will prevent them from sticking to each other while they are stored. Keep in jars or tins in a cool, dark place and consume in three weeks at most.
NOTE: these sweets have nothing that is hazardous to children, but I wouldn’t recommend to make this craft with children near. Sugar burns are very dangerous, as they stick to the skin and are not easy to rub off. Also, they are highly stimulant – if you don’t want your kids awake until 3 AM, give them the candies in the morning or before a big physical effort .

You mean how many candies a day? I would recommend not more than three a day for adults and only one a day for kids. None of its ingredients are dangerous, but kids can get excited easily when high on sugar, so it's better to give them these candies before doing exercise, or before going to school, and not in the evening. Think of it as a medicinal coffee!
