Okay I would like to discuss the wonderful world of Reiki, guides, angels, demons and aliens.
If you pick up one book on reiki it may tell you that when you become attuned you will automatically get a reiki guide who will be there to help you in your new practice ( and lifestyle if you go that route) in reiki ( Diane Stein's book on reiki is one of these books btw).
Another book ( or even practitioner) will talk about their Reiki angels.
A couple of people have had the opinion that reiki is really a high tech healing technique passed on from aliens......
And then there are the people out there who are freaked out by the unexplainable (or at the very least intangible) and feel that reiki is EVIL and really some sort of trick from ( devil, demons, bad mojo spirits/whatever).
I canna say that it is or isn't angels or guides. I'm pretty damn sure it ain't aliens and I KNOW it has nothing to do with bad juju of any type.
My take on reiki and these swirling perceptions about it is soley based on my experience.
For starters I am not into angels ( I don't discount them though) so it makes little sense to me that all of a sudden when I became a practitioner a magical "whoomph" opened up somewhere and I attained an angel.
I do believe in guides.....however I feel the same way about instant attainment in guides as I do with the angel theory.
I'm not touching the aliens bit.
The demons thing makes no sense because reiki can only be used for beneficial purposes. Demons from what I understand have very little patience for all that goody two shoes sort of thing that harmony, love, understanding and healing do.
For me I see Reiki as a sentient sort of energy. Not like a ghost or a spirit. I wish I could explain it.
For starters I am highly intuitive and over the years I have built a fair rapport with my "niggle" ( intuition, hunch maker, higherself, whatever you call it) and when I work with reiki it's almost exactly like working with my niggle. It's not a voice or an image. It's just a nudge and knowledge that while I may not get the details.....it is always spot on.
I know it isn't me though.
I say reiki is sentient because reiki KNOWS what is needed and on what level for a person you are working with. I've experienced this time and time again where someone will ask for reiki on a physical area ( say migraine or ankle injury) and reiki has me doing this that and the other.....and I am all like "why?". I rarely get an answer from reiki ( after all I'm just the vessel and it na about me at any rate). However most people I work with happily answer any questions I may have.
It's a wonderful working partnership really, though I personally do na believe that it is a special angel or guide at work. I honestly believe that it is pure reiki and that people have a hard time understanding and working with concepts of intangibility so have bridged it physically with theories and stories of angels and the like.
Again this is just my opinions based off my experiences and thought processes. Feel free to get out there and read up on it or talk to other practitioners.
This is the first comment I am making on this site and I happened upon your site through Google Alerts and I thank you all for your hospitality.
I have to agree with C.S. in his approach to Reiki, I am a Reiki Master which is nothing special except it gives me the opportunity to teach. I have spent many long hours delving into the history of Reiki and nowhere in the teachings of Dr. Usui have I found aliens, angels, demons or any of their ilk. The only thing I have had made available to me is the sure and certain recognition of a power (far greater than anything that can be manifested from within the human brain) which is able to work between two people in such a way that the person who has a need is able to benefit and at times, benefit to an incredible degree with no magic, no angels and no hocus pocus just a need within one and a hunger to be used as a channel (or funnel might be a more apt word) by the other. At which point the gentle power of Reiki takes over and both the practitioner and the recipient benefit.
Love and Light to you all

As you have probably seen, we are very open to any and all opinions on many subjects.
That said, I have to agree with both of you. When Celtic Spider attuned me I was abit skeptical (I know right? A pagan skeptic? WTF?!?) but went along with it because I trust Spider lady with my very soul. I really did not feel anything for the first day or so, and then after abit of practicing and meditations I sort of clicked into the source it seemed.
Not having much of any sort of training on this I started to use what I was shown by CS with my daughter who was have asthma issues at the time. My feable fumbling attempts, while I thought they were fumbling, actually did alot of good with her and she would have no issues for a day or so after a session. I did this for a couple of weeks and the flow became more natural for me and I realized then that while I cannot truly explain it, it is real. What pushed it beyond a simple toying with was the fact that after a week's worth of daily sessions, my daughter's breathing issues went away.
She was 6 at the time. She's now twelve years old, runs long distance cross country track and plays the flute at a Junior Master's level and hasn't had an asthmatic episode since.
I could na have said it better Bruce
I like the funnel description ( cause yeah....that is how it is/feels ).
Btw....I'm a chick. Heehee. Don't worry you na the first (nor will you be the last ) who mistakes me for a dude. In fact I found this particularly funny today because I had insomnia, was up late and was looking at my name going "geez that is AWFULLY adrogenous.....I wonder if anyone ever thinks I am a guy?"
Well you answered my musing.
Sorry Celtic Spider, Silly me. Must have been the potion I've been sniffing.... Just back to the message from Cloudrunner, The one thing I have found in the eight odd years with Reiki is no matter what sort of attempt you make, provided you make it with total intent and belief in the healing it will happen. Otherwise I would be a total disaster as a Reiki consultant.....
Love and Peace

I totally agree with you Bruce. Do you know how many times I have forgotten to invoke the long distance symbol and yet the person received the energy just fine? It's a good thing Reiki works with intent!
Oh, I have no problems believing that, I have used an analogy on several occasions where Reiki can be compared to a person by the side of the road with a flat battery and I come along with jumper leads and kick start them. And if you think through the parts that make up the whole there you can see similarities to someone sending Reiki to a lonely, helpless and in need soul somewhere off in the mist. EXCEPT YOU FORGOT THE JUMPER LEADS....
Love your work
Love Reiki

P.S. I use analogies and examples as often as I can - they make up for any inadequacies I have in properly describing messages - Being male, I tend normally to keep talking and writing to a minimum and so I often have to return to the scene of the crime (What I was talking about) and spell something out in infinitely minutedetail with either examples or analogies so with Reiki I have a few up my sleeve.

Reason: I'm a sloooow thinker
LOL!
I love the analogy!
Do na worry I speak in analogy, allegory, fable and more......mostly because my thought process allows me to look at something and instantly ping up at least 4 different ways to explain what I am looking at.
I gotta remember your jumper cable analogy. That sums it up just awesomely.
*hands you a lemon cookie*
I dunno...
You just feel lemony today.
Just to slide back a smidgen to your mention of the symbols, apart from being able to bring them to my mind, I really only use Reiki on it's own and the reason is, I had so much difficulty with people referring to the symbols as though they were Reiki rather than a symbol (by all means check Ecyyyyyclopedia) that I made a choice to practice Reiki without referring to the symbols. Made no blinking difference. My conclusion: The symbols are only a prop or a crutch. I'm sure this will have ppl wanting to discredit me, but that has been tried before to no avail fortunately. I can only call it as It works for my clients, my family and friends.
I've the attention span of a small rodent, so have a hard time remembering the symbols; what I did learn though is that I've been practicing Reiki for longer than I was actually attuned. Most of my life I've been in touch with energy, and have been able to mold, manipulate and guide it where I would like to see it. What I found with playing with the energy is that sometimes it would just do whatever it wanted to and went where it wanted. Over time I recognized that it was going to wherever it was needed the most.
After CS attuned me I was able to been feel / grasp / see / whatever the source energy and realized that I'd been practicing Reiki without knowing what it was for years.
So I totally agree with the statement that the symbols are not completely necessary. They are helpful no doubt, but overall not needed.
