I've never been one for describing rituals in depth very well. Here's my attempt at describing my family tradition for Samhain.
6 Candles
3 black
3 white
Pictures, drawings, crafts of those in the family that have passed or that they have made.
Sage smudge
Cauldron (or other firesafe container)
Strips of paper and pencils
Start with clearing the area around the altar and giving the area a general cleaning.
Light smudge and invoke whatever particular deity you will be invoking for the night while clearing the home with the smudge.
Light the candles one black, one white, one black, one white, one black, one white.
Holding the candles in your hands prior to lighting them, focus on your loved ones and energize the candle.
After that candle is energized, light the candle and invite your loved ones that have passed on into your home.
Continue until all 6 candles are lit.
Place candles in the five corners of the pentagram with the last candle (should be white) in the center.
Power this candle with happy and loving energy.
Place memories around the altar so they are clearly lit by the candle's light.
Spend some time with the family discussing what you are doing at this point and then pass around the pencils and papers and have them write all the bad things / habits / thoughts that they have that they wish to get rid of on the paper. While they do this have them focus on this words to empower them.
In your cauldron (or other firesafe container) burn the strips of paper while asking your loved ones to help you get rid of whatever it is you are burning away.
After this little rit is completed, set up dinner and make sure to have an extra setting with food. Eat up! Leaving the extra setting there for awhile.
Get dressed up and it's now TIME FOR TRICK OR TREAT!!!!
Return home, thank your loved ones for coming and take the extra setting outside and place in back yard for spirits to have a meal for their trip home. Come back in and close your altar.
