What is smudging? It is using smoke and fumes to cleanse, consecrate, bless , purify or protect an object place or person.
The three most used plant mateirals used for smudging are Sage, Cedar and Sweetgrass.
Let's take a look at them.
SAGE
Sage is burned in ceremonies to drive out bad spirits, negative thoughts or feelings. It is also burned to keep negative entities away from areas where ritual or ceremonies take place. So we see it being used as a purifier and protection.
CEDAR
Cedar is burnt while praying to Great Spirit. It works both ways as a purifier and as an attractment of good energies.
SWEETGRASS
Sweetgrass is usually burnt after Sage to welcome and invite in good energies after the Sage has expelled the negative. Some believe that Cedar can be used in the same manner.
HOW TO SMUDGE
There are a couple of ways to smudge.
One is to burn clippings (or shavings or the powdered up version of material) in a brazier over a charcoal. Please do not use a shell ( which is common in smudging kits at new age shops) as it is an insult to the Water Goddess.
Sage not only comes loosely but comes in a "wand" (bundle) and Sweet grass is usually braided. You can light one end of the bundle (or braid) and direct the smoke with your hand, a feather or a smudging fan ( usually a small fan made of feathers) over the area, person or object you are smudging.
If you have the ability to see auras then direct the smoke to any discolored areas.
It is suggested that if you are smudging a house that you offer Cedar to the four directions outside it first then use Sage on the inside of the house. Make sure to get all those nooks and crannies! Afterwords you can light a white candle to help "light up" the protected house ( just be careful not to burn yourself or anything else).
Smudging should be done with love, reverence and respect. Always give thanks to the plant that you are using to help you in your endeavors.
